This work is a part of “Chōjū-giga ~Omiyamairi-zu~ (Frolicking Animals’ Shrine Visit),” a grand masterpiece and life’s work by lantern artist Masateru Mikami, now making its long-awaited Kyoto premiere.
Inspired by the national treasure “Chōjū-giga,” hailed as the origin of Japanese manga, this epic project is slated to feature 108 characters upon completion. While around 60 have been created so far with the support of the Wataya Besso ryokan in Ureshino, Saga—the driving force behind the project—the full scope remains shrouded in mystery.
On display is a selection of carefully chosen pieces from this collection. The animals’ comical, human-like expressions and their life-like dynamism draw viewers deep into the world of the artwork. This exhibition marks a true “homecoming” for Mikami’s Chōjū-giga to Kyoto, the city where the original national treasure was born. We hope you will enjoy this glimpse into a magnificent story.

His works have gained significant attention and are featured at prominent locations such as Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Canal City, and Nagasaki Airport.
