Based on the Ukiyo-e and Japanese Painting Portal Database from Art Research Center, Ritsumeikan University, this work is inspired by Kitagawa Utamaro’s “Young Woman Blowing a Popen.”, housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Following the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, ukiyo-e spread to the West, influencing Impressionism and Art Nouveau. This influence then returned to Japan via artists like Renoir and Mucha, impacting “bijinga” (pictures of beautiful women) and “shojo manga” (girls’ comics). In the 1970s, “kawaii” culture emerged, leading to contemporary pop culture through phenomena such as punk, “gyaru” fashion, “deco” decorations, and “purikura” photo booths. I have condensed these 200 years of cultural evolution into a single painting. ” (isayamax)
