Playful Picture of the Drunken Monkey and Turtle

Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing Artisan Shoko Nagasawa

In a fantastical world like a paradise, suspended between day and night, a monkey dances and a turtle sings. They revel, joyfully intoxicated by freshly brewed sake.
This piece is a diptych created by two sisters. The elder, Shoko, a Yuzen artisan, dyed the background and flowers using hand-painted Yuzen techniques. On top of this, the younger sister, Natsuki, a Japanese painter, depicted the monkey, turtle, and sake using mineral pigments. The work was then completed with gold leaf accents applied by both.
Having grown up together before taking different paths, the sisters reconnected through this collaboration. We hope the viewer can feel their joy in gaining new perspectives and immortalizing that experience in this work.
